Preparing for Your Visit

Before the appointment

You will receive a text or email with a link to complete important documents ahead of time.

Please bring your child's insurance card and your ID if you plan to use Dental Benefits.

You are welcome to bring comfort items from home to make your child feel at ease: a favorite lovey, their own headphones, or the toothpaste they like to use at home (we can use this to make a custom blend for taste-sensitive kiddos).

How to Prepare

Remember, going to the dentist is a normal, routine part of life and self-care. Explain that the dentist will:

  • Help them brush and floss their teeth like they do at home

  • Count their teeth

  • Check how their smile is growing

  • Maybe even take some "tooth selfies" (x-rays) to get a better look.

Speak positively about their upcoming visit. Avoid talking about your personal dental experiences if they have been unpleasant.  Allow your child to have their own experience.

Kids are smart and sometimes phrases we use to reassure can have the opposite effect. Warning a child that something will not hurt can put a child on high alert. After all, you don't take your child out for ice cream but reassure them that it isn't going to taste bad. Model confidence for them, and we will partner with you to help them grow in that confidence during their visit.

What To Expect

A tour of the office and dedicated time with the Dr. Shah as she gets to know your family.

A thorough cleaning, exam, fluoride treatment and x-rays, if appropriate, meeting your child where they are.

We "Show and Tell" before we do, to make littles feel at ease.

We provide a thorough evaluation of hygiene, dietary, habit, and growth factors and offer customized suggestions to fit your family's lifestyle and optimize not just your child's smile, but overall health and development.

Why Choose a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist?

What does board certification mean?

Your child deserves care from an expert. A board-certified pediatric dentist is an expert with specialized training in treating kids of all ages.

Board-certified dentists commit to extra hours of training, extensive testing, and a review by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) to test knowledge and skills in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management. Dr. Shah has completed this voluntary process to provide the exceptional care your child deserves.

How long is the board-certification process?

Not every dentist who treats kids has gone through this voluntary process. The process to become board-certified typically takes several years to complete. After earning a dental degree, a dentist must complete a two-year residency program in pediatric dentistry that is accredited by the American Dental Association.

Once this residency is completed, a rigorous examination administered by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) must be passed. Overall, board certification takes around 2-3 years, depending on education and training.
